Myofascial Release Flashcards
What is the fascia?
Specialised connective tissue surrounding the muscle.
What does the fascia do?
Supports nerves + vessels
Allows muscles to move over 1 another
Provides stability, contour, fluidity + lubrication
Contracts + relaxes w/ muscle
Contributes to force prod
What does the fascia have embedded within:?
Proprioceptors
What are the 2 layers of the fascia
Superficial
Deep
Superficial layer of the fascia
Thin elastic fibres under surface of skin
Deep layer of the fascia
Separates muscles + organs
Why does the fascia tighten?
Trauma
Reaction
Adhesions
Reasons why fascia gets tight
Trauma
Can be a single or chronic event
Reasons why fascia gets tight
Reaction
Collagen becomes dense + fibrous
Elastin loses its resiliency
Ground substances solidify
Reasons why fascia gets tight
Adhesions
Adhesions are formed
What do adhesions result in?
Limit stretching
⬇️ ROM
Causes pain
Movement imbalances
Bf restrictions
What is a trigger point?
Mix of fascial adhesions + unrelaxed muscles causing pain.
Where does a trigger point come from?
An over release of Ach due to constant firing within the muscle, not allowing it to relax.
Is it known for sure how myofascial release works?
No, but there are suggestions.
What are the suggestions for how myofascial release works?
Thixotrophy
Pizoelectricity
Rehydration
Adhesions
