What is myocarditis?
A
Inflammation of the heart muscle

What causes myocarditis?
A
Infection (Coxsackie virus, fungal, bacterial or parasitic) Cocaine Chemo & other drugs Autoimmune e.g. rheumatic fever and SLE Sarcoid Idiopathic

How does myocarditis present?
A
With: Chest Pain Tachypnoea/Tachycadia Cyanosis Arthralgia Infection symptoms - Sore throat/malaise/fever/headache/fatigue

How do we test for myocarditis?
A
EC Biomarkers - CRP = inflammation --- cTn + Creatine Phosphodiesterase = myocardial damage ECHO/MRI/CXR Biopsy + PCR FBC - including antibody levels

How do we treat myocarditis?
A
Mostly Its self limiting
Can treat infection - Antibiotics, IV immunoglobulins, Antifungals etc
NSAIDS & Prednisalone CCS as anti-inflammatorys
ECMO - Extra-corporeal Membrane Oxygenation
