what is myocarditis and what can it cause?
A
the inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium).
can cause reduced heart function, heart failure, heart block, arrhythmias

what are the 4 causes?
A
Idiopathic (50%)
Viral (flu, hepatitis, mumps…)
Bacterial (TB…)
Spirochaetes etc

what are the symptoms>
A
Chest Pain (can be positional)
Breathlessness
Fatigue
Fever
Palpitations
Tachycardia
Soft S1, S4 Gallop

what investigations are used?
A
Positive Troponin I or T levels (confirm diagnosis)
ECG (look for ST elevation/depression, T wave inversion, atrial arrhythmias, AV block)
ECHO
CMRI

what 3 treatments are used?
A
Supportive - treating heart failure
Treat the underlying cause
Immunotherapy
