What is Myelodysplastic Syndrome?
A
- Caused by myeloid bone marrow cells not maturing properly and therefore not producing healthy blood cells

What do the blood components show?
A
- Anaemia
- Neutropenia
- Thrombocytopenia

Who is it typically seen in?
A
- patients above 60 years old
- patients who had previous treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy

What can myelodysplastic syndrome turn into?
A
- Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

How does myelodysplastic syndrome present?
A
- Typically asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed on a FBC
- Anaemia ( Fatigue, Pallor, SOB)
- Neutropenia ( frequent/ severe infections)
- Thrombocytopenia ( Purpura/ Bleeding)

How do you diagnose Myelodysplastic Syndrome?
A
- FBC (abnormal)
- Blood Film (Blast cells)

How is the diagnosis confirmed?
A
- Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
