What is Lymphoma?
A group of cancers that affect the lymphocytes inside the lymphatic system.
These cancerous cells proliferate within the lymph nodes and cause abnormally large lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy)
What are the two categories of lymphoma?
- Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non- Hodgkin Lymphoma
What is the common age for Lymphoma?
- Bimodal age distribution (peaks at 20 and 75 years old)
How common is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
1 in 5 cancers are lymphomas
What are the Risk Factors for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
- HIV
- EBV
- Autoimmune conditions: RA and sarcoidosis
- Family History
How does Lymphoma present?
- Lymphadenopathy is the key presenting symptom
- They are characteristically non-tender and feel rubbery
- Pain can some times be felt when they drink alcohol
Where is lymphadenopathy commonly seen?
- Neck, Axilla, Inguinal
What are some of the B symptoms?
- Fever
- Weight Loss
- Night Sweats
What are some of the other symptoms of Lymphoma?
- Fatigue
- Itching
- Cough
- SOB
- Abdo pain
- Recurrent infections
How is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma characterised?
- Hodgkin/ Reed- Sternberg cells
- These are large, multinucleated malignant cells
- Described as having an owl like appearance
What are the types of Hodgkin Lymphoma?
- Classical
- Nodular Lymphocyte- predominant
What are the types of Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma?
- Nodular sclerosis
- Mixed cellularity
- Lymphocyte rich
- Lymphocyte depleted
What is Nodular Lymphocyte- predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma?
- Significant make preponderance
- common in black ethnicity
- lymphohistiocytic Reed- Sternberg variant
