What is myelodysplasia?
abnormal maturation and proliferation of haematopoietic stem cells in bon marrow
Pathophys of myelodysplasia?
deformed cells cannot get into blood stream
often affects red cells, granulocytes, platelets (pancytopenia)
Presentation of myelodysplasia?
often in elderly
isolated anaemia
general - fatigue/ SOB/ pallor/ petechiae
Symptoms of myelodysplasia?
depends on affected cell line:
neutropenia - recurrent infections
thrombocytopenia - easy bruising/ bleeding
Lab findings/ investigation of myelodysplasia?
cytopenias in FBC
blood film = morphological disorder of cell line
red cell macrocytosis
bone marrow exam
WHO classification of myelodysplasia?
6 subtypes
What condition can myelodysplasia develop into and why?
AML - build of of blasts in bone marrow
Treatment of Myelodysplasia?
Blood and platelet transfusions
thalidomide
