Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Flashcards
Cause what kind of pneumonia
Atypical - why? it is unresponsive to beta lactate antibiotics
morphology and features
fried egg colonies; smallest organism capable of growth on cell free media
lacks cell wall
peptidoglycan bound by cell membrane contain sterols
requires cholesterols for growth (add to media for organism to grow)
does not show up on gram stain
attachment site
attaches to terminal adhesion protein to carbohydrate receptors on epithelium
path
rest epithelial damage due to hydrogen peroxide
RBC damage-hemolytic anemia
inhibits ciliary movement causing prolonged cough
infection limited to resp mucosa that lines the airway, alveoli not involved
T or F: alveoli is harmed with infection
false
treatment
no penicillin !!
use erythromycin or doxycycline (tetracyclines)
can provide doxycycline as antibiotic prophylaxis for those with sickle cell disease or antibody deficiencies upon exposure
Complications
Hemolytic anemia,
Hemolysis (in sickle cell patients),
Steve johnson syndrome (erythma multiforme- type 4 sensitivity,
Raynauds’ phenomenon
