non-gonococcal urethritis

  • it presents similarly to chlamydia and often individuals are infected with both organisms
  • most cases are asymptomatic

A

nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)

  • traditional cultures cannot be used as it slow-growing
  • NAAT looks for the DNA / RNA of the bacteria

  • first urine sample in the morning for men
  • self-taken vaginal swab (VVS) in women

A

macrolide resistance

  • there are increasing problems with antibiotic resistance, particularly with azithromycin
  • a test of cure should also be performed in every positive patient

A
  • doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 7 days

followed by

  • azithromycin 1g stat then 500mg once a day for 2 days

(unless it is known to be resistant to macrolides)
