Mycoplasma Genitalium Flashcards
1
Q
What is the main presentation of mycoplasma genitalium infection?
A
non-gonococcal urethritis
- it presents similarly to chlamydia and often individuals are infected with both organisms
- most cases are asymptomatic
2
Q
What are the potential complications of mycoplasma genitalium infection?
A
- urethritis
- epididymitis
- cervicitis
- endometritis
- PID
- reactive arthritis
- preterm delivery
- tubal infertility
3
Q
What investigation is performed in suspected MG infection?
A
nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)
- traditional cultures cannot be used as it slow-growing
- NAAT looks for the DNA / RNA of the bacteria
4
Q
What samples are required to test for MG?
A
- first urine sample in the morning for men
- self-taken vaginal swab (VVS) in women
5
Q
What must every positive sample for MG be tested for?
A
macrolide resistance
- there are increasing problems with antibiotic resistance, particularly with azithromycin
- a test of cure should also be performed in every positive patient
6
Q
What is the recommended treatment for MG?
A
- doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 7 days
followed by
- azithromycin 1g stat then 500mg once a day for 2 days
(unless it is known to be resistant to macrolides)
7
Q
What is the treatment for MG in pregnancy?
A
azithromycin alone
doxycycline is contraindicated
8
Q
What is used in complicated MG infections?
A
moxifloxacin
