Cervical Ectropion Flashcards
1
Q
What causes cervical ectropion?
A
- the columnar epithelium of the endocervix extends out to the ectocervix
- the lining of the endocervix becomes visible on speculum examination
also called erosion
2
Q
What is the main presentation of ectropion?
A
postcoital bleeding
- the columnar epithelial cells are more fragile
- they are more likely to bleed with sexual intercourse
3
Q
In which group of people is ectropion more common?
A
- it is associated with higher oestrogen levels
- it is more common in younger women, pregnancy and COCP use
4
Q
What is the transformation zone?
A
- the border between the columnar epithelium of the endocervix
- and the stratified squamous epithelium of the ectocervix
in ectropion, this becomes visible on speculum examination
5
Q
What is the most common presentation of ectropion?
A
asymptomatic
- most are found incidentally during speculum examination for other reasons (usually smear tests)
6
Q
What symptoms may ectropion present with?
A
- increased vaginal discharge
- vaginal bleeding (particularly PCB)
- dyspareunia
7
Q
What is the treatment for asymptomatic ectropion?
A
- there is no treatment
- it will resolve as the patient gets older, stops the pill or is no longer pregnant
ectropion is NOT a contraindication for the COCP
