MVC - Synaptic Integration Flashcards
What is the language of neurons?
Electrical signalling
- Connectivity (modality)
- Patterns of activity (intensity)
Chemical signalling
What results in an electrical current?
When allowed to move between compartments, the flow of electrical ion charges down their electrochemical gradient produces an electrical current
What is resistance?
The restriction to ion flow
What is Capacitance?
The ability of a system to store an electric charge
What is Ohms Law?
The electrical circuit will consist of three related electrical variables called: Voltage, ( V, in volts ), Current, ( I, in amperes ) and Resistance, (R, in ohms Ω ) or conductance (G, in siemens)
V = IR
How does the voltage effect of a membrane current change with distance from the injection site?
Voltage effect decreases with distance
Why does the voltage effect of a membrane current take time?
Due to membrane capacitance
How does membrane potential differences arise?
From the separation of ions inside/outside cell
What was used to determine the ionic basis of the action potential?
Voltage Clamps
