KD - Development of the Nervous System Flashcards
What is neurogenesis?
The birth and development of neurons
What is migration?
Neurons move to their designated positions and establish connections
What is differentiation?
Neurons acquire specific functions and characteristics
What does target innervation involve?
The selection and connection of neurons with their specific target cells
What does synapse formation represent in neural development?
Process of establishing connections between neurons, enabling communication in the nervous system
What is the role of the notochord in neural development?
A structure that forms in the midline of the embryo and serves as a foundation for the development of the nervous system
What is the neural plate, and where does it develop?
A special part of the ectoderm that develops above the notochord
What is neurulation?
Neuroectodermal precursor cells transform the neural plate into the neural tube
What are 2 regions of the neural tube?
Floorplate (Located above the notochord)
Roofplate (Where the tube closes at the top)
What do neural crest cells do during neuralation?
Separate from the neural tube and develop into the PNS
What does the front part of the neural tube form?
The Brain
Near somites, what does the neural tube form?
Spinal cord
What does the lumen of the neural tube form?
Ventricles of the brain
- Filled with CSF
What does proliferation and segmentation generate?
The early spinal cord and:
1) Brainstem
2) Midbrain
3) Forebrain
What distinguishes humans from animals?
The size of the cortex
