Mutation Flashcards
What is a mutation - give an example
The genetic information is stable however there is still a possibility where genetic material is changed
Parents of normal height have a child who has dwarfism which are occurred in one or two of the parents gametes. A change in DNA code.
What is the causes of mutations
Causative and Non-Causative mutations
Causative mutations?
Are induced mutations caused by environmental, chemical and radiation which are classified as mutagenic agents.
Non-Causative mutations?
Spontaneous mutations which occur more frequently as an individual ages
Spontaneous mutation example
10,000 years ago everyone had brown eyes until one individual developed a genetic mutation causing their eyes to become blue.
Induced mutation example
Fukushima accident causes genetic coding to be affecting causing mutations
How does DNA code for Proteins? PT1 (condons)
The bases in nucleotides are read in groups of three called codons.
Each codon codes for one amino acid. While serval different codons code can also code for one amino acid.
How does DNA code for proteins? PT2 (genes and chromosome)
One Gene consists of many condones enough to code for all amino acids in one proteins chain.
Chromosomes consists of many genes which are separated by stop codons, often sections of DNA.
Chromosomal mutations
An individual usually inherits two copies of each chromosome in homologous pairs however a chromosomal mutation occurs when only one copy of the chromosome or more the two copies of are inherited.
