Mutagenesis Flashcards
What causes sectorial chimeras?
They result from mutations which affect sections of the apical meristem, the altered genotype extending through all the cell layers.
What causes periclinal chimeras?
Subsequent divisions forming an entire layer of the mutated type.
What causes mericlinal chimeras?
A mutated cell layer may be maintained on only one portion of the meristem.
Why are many mutations not passed on?
Many mutations do not hit the reproduction pathway.
What is self-incompatibility?
A genetically determined system to prevent self-fertilisation.
Why is Arabidopsis thaliana used as a model organism?
Small. Fully sequenced genome. Fast generation time. Small genome. Self-fertile. Transposons for tagging available.
How can you induce mutations?
Using seeds.
Ionising radiation.
Chemicals.
Biological (insertions).
