what is a classical 6th chord?
3rd in the bass and root a 6th above it
what is a pop 6th chord?
any triad with an added 6th above the root as a chord factor
what is a chord factor?
a member/component of a chord
what is a bass note?
the lowest note played in a chord or sonority
what is a sonority or simultaneity?
more than 1 complete musical texture happening at the same time rather than in succession
what is phonation?
the production and utterance of speech sounds
what are augmented intervals?
one half step larger that a perfect/major interval
what are diminished intervals?
one half step less that perfect/major interval
what is root position?
the lowest note played in a chord
what is polyphonic texture?
the texture that counterpoint creates
what is homophonic texture?
a main melody supported and accompanied by other instruments
what is monophonic texture?
a single unaccompanied melodic line
what is an angular melodic line?
a melody line that is disjunct
e.g. large leaps, skip wise motion
what are dissonant harmonies?
a combination of pitches that are relatively harsh and grating
what is Tessitura?
the range which most notes of a vocal range fall
what is octave displacement?
placing notes in different octaves
what is a tonic triad?
keynote, third, fifth
what is tonic function?
first scale degree of any diatonic scale
what is dominant function?
a chord that creates instability that requires the tonic for resolution
typically:
dominant triads 7th chords and 9th chords
what is a half-diminished 7th chord
7th chord with root, minor 3rd, diminished 5th, and minor 7th

what is a diminished 7th chord?
adds minor 3rd above diminished triad
7th is 3 half steps above the flat 5th
what is tonality?
music that has a tonic
what is skip-wise motion?
the movement from one note to another while moving in intervals of at least a 3rd or more
what does skip-wise motion do?
leaves the listener wondering where the melody will go next
what is a quarter tone?
a pitch that is half way between the usual notes in a chromatic
about half as wide as a semitone
what is a diatonic scale?
any heptatonic scale that contains 5 whole steps and 2 half steps in each octave
each half step is separated by 2 whole steps
what is consonance?
the impression of stability and repose in relation to dissonance
what is dissonance?
the impression of tension and clash

what does diatonic mean?
any step-wise arrangement of the 7 scale degrees forming an octave without altering the established key or mode
in particular the mahor and natural minor scales

the treatment of a pitch other than the overall tonic as a temporary tonic in compasition

using roman numerals th identify chords within the context of key signatures
