MODULATION:
the change from one tonality to another
Harmonic requirements:
quasi-tonic modulation, dominant, pivot chord
Melodic requirements:
a recognizable segment of the scale of the quasi-tonic or strategically placed leading tone
Metric and Rythmic requirements:
quasi-tonic and modulating dominant on metrically accented beats, prominent pivot chord
PIVOT CHORD:
in the theory of harmony, a pivot chord is a chord that is diatonic to more that one key
What is a pivot chord also called?
common chord
METRICALLY ACCENTED BEATS:
accents that occur with each time signature or meter
MODULATING DOMINANT:
a dominant of the quasi-tonic
COMMON CHORD MODULATION:
moves from the original key to the destination key by way of chords both keys share
what is common chord modulation also called?
diatonic-pivot-chord modulation
ENHARMONIC MODULATION:
when a chord is treated as if it were spelled enharmonically as a functional chord in the original key then proceeds in the destination key
COMMON TONE MODULATION:
Uses a sustained or repeated pitch from the old key as a bridge between it and the new key
CHROMATIC MODULATION:
one which involves the chromatic inflection of one or more notes whose letter name thus remains the same though altered through an accidental
PHRASE MODULATION:
a static jump between keys with out transitional material
what is phrase modulation also called?
direct, static, or abrupt modulation
