Musculoskeletal System Conditions Flashcards
What are the 4 types of Shin Splints?
Medial tibial stress syndrome - injury to soleus and tibialis anterior. Most common shin splint.
Tibialis injury - anterior or posterior
Periostitis - damage to periosteum
Stress fractures - hairline fractures of the tibia
Myofascial Trigger Point
pain-generating spots on muscles that are palpable as knits or taut bands
Sprain vs. Strain
A sprain is a tear in a tendon
A sprain is a tear in a ligament
Hyperkyphosis vs. Hyperlordosis
Hyperkyphosis is excess curvature in the thoracic region
Hyperlordosis is excess curvature of the neck or lumbar region.
Scoliosis
Abnormal lateral curve of the vertebral column
Should a muscle strain be massaged?
Yes. After the acute stage of inflammation has passed massage can influence the production of useful scar tissue, reduce adhesions and edema, and rest abolish range of motion.
Should sprains be massaged?
Yes. After the acute stage of inflammation has passed ligaments respond well to massage and passive stretching. During the acute stage lymphatic massage can reduce edema.
Subluxation
An incomplete dislocation in which the joint surfaces still meet
What are the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease?
Signs: Circular bull’s-eye rash at the site of the tick bite, reddened skin, fever
Symptoms: fatigue, joint pain, numbness. Later symptoms may include intermittent acute inflammation of one or more large joints, irregular heartbeat, Bell Palsy
Signs/Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Signs: stiff joints with bony deformation and inflammation, most often in knees, hips, and interphalangeal joints
Symptoms: painful joints
What is Patellofemoral syndrome?
An overuse disorder of the patellar cartilage.
What are the signs and symptoms of Patellofemoral syndrome?
Signs: none
Symptom: pain at the knee; feels stiff after not moving; discomfort walking down stairs
What is Osteoarthritis?
Degeneration and inflammation of synovial joint due to wear and tear to articular cartilage.
Spondylosis
One or more lumbar vertebra slide anteriorly due to injury or structural anomaly
Signs/Symptoms of Spondylosis
Signs: tight hamstrings, weakness in affected dermatomes
Symptoms: low back spasms and pain radiating into buttocks and thighs
Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease
Chronic or traumatic irritation at the insertion of the quadriceps tendon in combination with adolescent growth spurts
Signs/symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease
Signs: hot, swollen tibial tuberosity
Symptoms: painful tibial tuberosity
Plantar Fasciitis
Degeneration (with some inflammation) of the plantar fascia (due to collagen braking down)
Signs/symptoms of plantar fasciitis
Signs: none
Symptoms: acutely painful after prolonged immobility. It feels sharp and like a bruise, usually at the anterior calcaneus.
Is massage contraindicated for plantar fasciitis?
No. Massage of the fascia can improve he quality of scar tissue. Massage can also relieve tension in the calf muscles that out strain on the plantar fascia. If acute (unlikely) avoid deep work.
Tenosynovitis
Inflammation of a tendon and its enveloping sheath
Tinnitus
Ringing, booming or whistling in the ear.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Occlusion of nerve and blood supply to the arm
Signs/Symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome
Signs: possible discoloration of arm and hand from impaired circulation
Symptoms: shooting pains, weakness, numbness, paresthesia
Should someone with thoracic outlet syndrome be massaged?
Yes. Massage can create space for u impeded blood and nerve impulse. Care must be taken not to exacerbate pressure on the nerves and blood vessels.
Which bone cells alter bone shape?
Osteoblasts (bone Builders)
Osteoclasts (bone Clearers)
