Circulatory System Conditions Flashcards
Transient Ischemic attacks
Also called a mini stroke, occurs when a blockage is due to a small clot that melts within a few hours. Damage may be mild by cumulative after multiple transient ischemic attacks
Ischemic stroke
The most common form of strike, caused by a blood clot or blockage that forms in the brain (cerebral thrombosis) or a clot that travels to the brain (embolism)
Cryptogenic stroke
Cause unknown. May be related to a patent for amen ovale, an abnormal opening in the septum of the heart that allows blood clots into the brain.
How can kidney dysfunction impact the heart?
If the kidneys do not adequately clean the blood the heart may respond by pumping faster to get the blood filtered.
Why is atherosclerosis?
Hardening of the arteries from any cause
What is the bad or “lazy” type of cholesterol?
LDL (low density lipid)
Remember L for Lazy!
What are the controllable risk factors associated with Atherosclerosis?
Smoking, High LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle, Diabetes
What is the good, “high speed” cholesterol?
HDL - high density lipid
The heart is divided by the ______ into the right and left halves.
septum
