musculoskeletal system Flashcards
What is the Structure of the MSK system?
Bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and
organs together.
What is the function of the MSK system?
Form, support, stability, movement to the body.
What are the main functions of the skeletal system?
Mineral homeostasis • Hematopoietic function • Mechanical support for movement • Protection of organs • Body size and shape
What is a bones structure?
35% organic matrix, 65% inorganic elements
What do the osteoclasts do?
cells that destroy/eat away damaged bone
What do the osteoblasts do?
they replace with healthy bone
what is osteoporosis?
bone is destroyed more than its being restored
Please describe the key anatomical structures of a synovial joint?
Bone ends are covered by articular cartilage
- Held in place by ligaments
- Enclosed by the synovial membrane
What do joints allow?
movement
What does the cartilage do?
Smooth surface, eliminates friction Synovial fluid: joint lubricant
What does the ligament do?
- Form a fibrous capsule
* Dictate movement
How can resistance exercise improve joint alignment?
increase in muscle/tendon strength
increase in joint stability
reduce cartiladge breakdown
