A

Natural response of the body to a pathogen or injury.

First step in the healing process.

Mainly a function of the blood vessels

Aims to attract leukocrytes in the affected area.

Which are the cardinal signs of inflammation and why do they occur?

A

Heat/redness-
Increased blood flow due to vascular dilatation gives redness and heat.

Swelling-
Increased vascular permeability gives oedema causing tissue swelling.

Loss of function-
Pain and swelling result in loss of function.

leukocytes

A

Diapedesis-
Ability to slip out of the capilaries and into the tissues.

Amoeboid Motion-
Moving through tissues spaces by forming cytoplasmic extensions and rolling along other cells.

Positive chemotaxis-
Ability to pinpoint affected areas by following chemical trails of inflammatoty molecules.
