Arthritis
painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.
Calf Tenderness
Tenderness when palpating the calf may indicate a DBT (deep vein thrombosis)
Costochondritis
Inflammation of the cartilage which connects a rib to the sternum.
Fracture
Broken bones
Malleolus
Bony projection on each side of the ankle
Osteomyelitis
Inflammation or infection of bone
Paraspinal Tenderness
Tenderness of the muscles on either side of the spine
Radiculopathy
Pinched or compressed nerve in the spine
Snuff Box
A triangular indentation seen on the radial, dorsal aspect of the hand (back of the hand on the thumb side) when the the is extended. Tenderness over this area indicates likely scaphoid fracture even if a fracture is not visualized on X-ray.
Step-Offs
Deformity/misalignment of the spine felt on palpation, indicates spinal fracture.
Straight leg raise (SLR)
Positive when pain is elicited when the provider lifts the patients leg above the horizontal level while the patient is laying on their back. Usually indicates sciatica or herniated disc.
