Musculoskeletal Labs Flashcards
Significance of Calcium
99% can be found in teeth and bone; the most common mineral in the body
Glucocorticoids
Regulates protein metabolism
Vitamin D
Promotes absorption of Calcium and Phosphorus from small intestine
What regulates serum calcium level in the blood?
Parathyroid Hormone
Phosphorus
Works closely together with calcium to build strong bones and teeth
Calcitonin
When Ca levels are elevated, this hormone will decrease it by inhibiting bone resorption and increasing renal excretion of Calcium and Phosphorus
Growth hormone
Responsible for increasing bone length
Parathyroid hormone
When calcium in blood is low, this hormone stimulates osteoclast activity and release calcium into the blood raising calcium levels
Androgens
Can cause anabolism and increased bone mass
Estrogen
Stimulates osteoblastic activity and inhibits parathyroid hormone (PTH)
Thyroxine
Increases the rate of protein synthesis in all types of tissue, including bone
Insulin
Works together with growth hormone to build and maintain healthy bone tissue
Osteoblast
Bone-forming cell
Osteoclast
Bone-destroying cell
