Musculoskeletal impairments and Other Flashcards
Rheumatoid arthritis in the morning
RA can cause considerable fluctuations in ability due to pain, stiffness, and fatigue. A client may experience morning stiffness which limits ability to perform therapy as apposed to same patient in afternoon
Best splint for de Quervain syndrome
Forearm-based thumb spica splint
Most common areas for decubitus ulcers
Boney prominences, such as elbow or heal
Scaffolding approach
Scaffolding occurs when OTR helps perform parts if task that are difficult, but the client ultimately completes the task on their own
Community profile
Gives practitioners information about the participants, their condition and context. This is all viewed through performance skills, performance patterns, and client factors
ROM contraindication for rheumatoid arthritis
Increasing AROM is contraindicated with rheumatoid arthritis because of pulling that may occur on the joint, thereby increasing joint deformity
-Supporting task performance with splinting or assistive devices would be a more appropriate intervention outcome
Reducing development of osteoporosis
Low-impact weight-bearing exercises and education can help older adults to reduce osteoporosis
Fibromyalgia related disturbed sleeping pattern consequences
Nonrestorative sleep, fatigue, and pain interfere with the client’s ability to pay attention and remember day-to-day events (attention and memory)
Daily Activity Log
Assessment useful in gaining information on a typical 24-hour day and provide information about when a client is in pain, fatigued, or frustrated and what activities aggravate or improve functional performance
Kyphosis and osteoporosis
A kyphosis is an abnormal rounding of the upper back. In the case of osteoporosis, it is caused by compression fractures of the thoracic vertebrae weakened by the osteoporotic condition.
Boutonnière deformity
Boutonnière deformity is defined as PIP flexion combined with DIP hyperextension.
Swan neck deformity
injury of the MCP, PIP, or DIP; characterized by PIP hyperextension and DIP flexion
Functional training phase for unilateral myoelectric terminal device (TD)
During the functional training phase, a client is learning to incorporate the TD as a functional assist. Bilateral activities that require one dominant extremity (the hand) and one functional assist (the TD) are the best tasks for practice
-Example: cutting paper with scissors
Neuroma
A neuroma is a ball of nerve tissue that occurs when axons attempt to grow back in the distal limb after amputation. They can be painful when pressed but are not necessarily visible.
