Musculoskeletal anatomy: Intrinsic muscles of the back. Flashcards
What are the groups of muscles in of the intrinsic of the back?
Erector spinae muscles, transversospinal muscles and the minor deep muscles of the back.
What provides innervation to the intrinsic muscles of the back
The postirior rami of the spinal muscles.
Name the erector spinae muscles and their functions.
Iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis. The provide bilateral extention of the spine and iliocostalis provides ipsilateral flexion of the spine.
Name the transversospinal muscle, their location and their function.
Semispinalis (Capitis, cervicis and thoracis, cervical and thoraric regions), multifidus (thoracolumbar region) and Rotares longus and brevis (thoracic region). Provide contralateral rotation of the spine, while semispinalis capitis provides extention of the head.
What are the muscles of the minor deep group and what are their functions
Interspinalis, intertransversari and levatores costarum. Interspinal provides extention of the spine. Intertransversari and levatores costarum provide ispisalateral lateral flexion of the spine. Levatores costarum provides elevation of the ribs.
What are the muscle groups of the neck?
Splenius muscles, sternocleidomastoid muscle, suboccipital muscles and the deep muscles of the neck.
What are the two splenius muscles?
Splenius capitis and splenious cervicis
What are the functions of splenius capitis?
Bilateral extention of the neck and ipsilateral flexion and rotation of the neck.
What is the origin and insertion of splenius capitus?
O: SPs CVII to TIII and ligamentum nuchae | I: Mastoid process
What is the function of splenius capitis?
Bilateral extention of the head, ipsilateral flexion and rotation of the head.
What is the origin and insertion of splenious cervicis?
O: SPs TIII to TVI and ligumentum nuchae | I: TPs of CI to CIII
What is the origin and insertion of the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
O: Mastoid process | I: manubrium of the sternum and the medial clavicle.
What is the function of the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Bilateral extention of the head at the atlanto-occipital joint and cervical flexion. Ipsilateral lateral flexion of the neck and contralateral rotation of the neck.
What innervates the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Spinal accessory n. (CNXI)
What are the 3 muscle in the suboccipital group?
Obliquus capitis superior and inferior; rectus capitis major and minor.
