Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Most Severe and most common
dystrophin is absent from the muscle
dystrophin
protein in skeletal muscle
DMD in children
becomes apparent ages 3-7
by age 12 ambulation is impossible
disease progresses rapidly
DMD symptoms
waddling gait increase falling swayback loss of 20 IQ points muscular atrophy
DMD prognosis
death from cardiac failure or respiratory infection

prenatal diagnosis at 12 weeks
blood test for gene mutation

AKA Brittle Bone Disease
Types of OI
6 types. II is lethal (stillborn) III severe (^^ bone gragility)

small stature

OI treatment
bone marrow transplant
surgery for fractures

Leg-calve perthes disease
aseptic necrosis of the femoral head
in XRAY head of femur is literally non existent
Stages of Leg Calve Disease (4)
1: necrosis
2: re-vascularization
3: re-ossification
4: regenerative stage
Leg-Calve Disease Clinical Manifestations
hip pain/ sore
decrease in ROM
XRAY reveals osteonecrosis
Leg-Calve Disease Treatment
Goals:
Increase ROM
Decrease pain
decrease necrosis
Tx:
casts
traction
pelvic or femoral osteotomy
