Musculoskeletal Flashcards
1
Q
what is compartment syndrome
A
increased pressure within a muscle. e.g. fracture esp in a cast, abdomen.
2
Q
Signs of compartment syndrome
A
- pain (swelling)
- pulselessness
- paresthesia
- paralysis
- pallor
These are likely to happen when the pressure is too much that it begins to cut off circulation
3
Q
treatment for compartment syndrome
A
fasciotomy (a surgical procedure where the fascia is cut to relieve the pressure). This reduces pressure allowing normal blood flow
4
Q
Physical assessment is performed in what order
A
- inspection
- palpation
- check for range of motion
- check joint stability
