Musculoskeletal Flashcards
DEFINE: antaligic gait
- STANCE phase of AFFECTED side and
- SWING phase of NORMAL side
- are lessened
describe: modified trendelenberg test
What does a positive finding indicate?
patient stands with feet shoulder width apart and lifts one leg
POSITIVE if pt drops iliac crest on side of lifted leg
POSITIVE –> weakness on contralateral side
DEFINE: SCFE
slipped capital femoral epiphysis
DEFINE: Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
DEFINE: trendelenberg gait
Name a test for piriformis syndrome
Log roll test
Describe the log roll test; what is it called?
- Freiberg test
- pt lays supine
- leg is extended and relaxed as examiner internally and exterally rotates the leg (as in a log roll)
POSITIVE if movement is restricted or elicits pain
Describe the FABER test for the hip; what is it called?
- Patrick test
- with patient lying supine
- Flexion
- ABduction
- External Rotation
- of the hip
- ankle should rest on knee of contralateral leg
POSITIVE if
- posterior pain in sacroiliac joint, lumbar spine, or posterior hip
- groin pain –> intra-articular pathology
Describe the FADIR test for the hip; what is it called?
- impingement test
- with patient lying supine
- Flexion
- ADduction
- Internal Rotation
- of the hip
POSITIVE if PAIN
Describe the Stinchfield test and describe a POSITIVE finding
What imaging should be used for hip pain?
- initially, radiology if there is supsicion of acute fracture, dislocation, or stress fracture
- should include AP view of pelvis and frog-leg lateral view of symptomatic hip
- MRI: to detect soft tissue abnormalities if radiology does not ID pathology in pt w/ persistent pain (MRI arthography 90% sensitive, 91% specific compared to traditional MRI 30%, 36%)
- ultrasonography: evaluate individual tendons, confirm suspected bursitis, ID joint effusions
