Muscular System Flashcards
Flexion and extension
Flexion - bending at a joint
Extension - straightening at a joint
Abduction and adduction
Abduction - body part moves away from the midline of the body
Adduction - movement towards the midline of the body
Rotation
When a body part turns about the long axis of the anatomical position
Plantar-flexion and dorsiflexion
Plantar-Flexion - Flexion that causes the toes to move downward away from the shin
Dorsiflexion - upward towards the shin
Origin
Where a muscle joins a stationary bone
Insertion
Where a muscle joins a moving bone
Agonist
The muscle that contracts to make movement
Antagonist
The muscle that elates during movement
Antagonistic pair
Muscles work in opposition: the create movement when one contracts (agonist) and the others relaxes (antagonist)
Isotonic
Muscles change length as they contarct
Isometric
Muscle contracts but stays the same length
Concentric
Muscle contracts and it shortens
Eccentric
Muscle contracts and it lengthens
Slow twitch muscle fibers
Contract slowly
Produce little force
Higher fatigue tolerance
Good for endurance
Fast twitch muscle fibers
Contract quickly
Produce large amount of force
Lower fatigue tolerance
Good for power
