Muscular System Flashcards
What is Excitability
The ability to receive and respond to stimulation
What is Contractibility
The ability to shorten and thicken, causes movement
What is Extensibility
Ability to stretch and lengthen
What is elasticity
Ability to return to its original shape after contraction
Skeletal Muscle
Muscle attached to the skeleton and causes body movement. Conscious muscle because a person has control of it’s action.
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle that forms the walls of the heart and contracts to circulate blood.
Visceral/Smooth Muscle
Muscle is found in the internal organs of the body such as the digestive tract and respiratory issues.
Origin
The place where the muscle begins
Insertion
The place where the muscle ends. For example the Sternocleidomastoid.
Muscles are named by their Action
Such as flexion and extension. (Flexor/Extendor)
Muscles are named by their Location
Such as their location on the body or organ they are near.
Muscles are named by their Direction
The way the fibers run, for example Rectus Abdominis and Transverse Abdominis
Muscles are named by their Number of Division
Such as BIceps brachi and TRIceps brachi
Muscles are named by their Size
Such as the gluteus maximus
Muscles are named by their Shape
Such as the deltoid muscle which is triangular in shape
