Muscular System Flashcards
A group of muscles toward the inner thighs that bring the legs toward the center of the body.
Adductors
Flexes elbow and rotates forearm. Located in the scapula of the shoulder girdle (bicep).
Biceps Brachii
Responsible for movement in the hip and knee joints. Located at the posterior of the thigh.
Biceps Femoris
Located on the cheeks. Responsible for swallowing, sucking, and blowing.
Buccinators
Flexes elbow and abducts the arm and the humerus. Located in the scapular spine and the clavicle (shoulder).
Deltoid
Any of the muscles that straightens a limb out, such as your elbow, knee, wrist, or back.
Extensors
Located in between each rib, extending down to the 11th rib. Aid in expanding and contracting the chest cavity when the lungs are breathing.
External Intercostals
Located in the lower eight ribs (iliac crest). Flexes and rotates the vertebral column.
External Oblique
Located lateral to the fibula. Flexes plantar and everts the foot.
Fibularis Longus
A muscle that brings a limb closer to the body such as when you bring your hand up to your shoulder. Some are located in the bicep or hamstring.
Flexors
Located on the forehead. Raises the eyebrows and closes the eyes.
Frontalis
Located distal the femur (calf). Plantar flexes foot and flexes knee.
Gastrocnemius
Located distal the pelvis (buttocks). Extends hips.
Gluteus Maximus
Located superior the gluteus maximus. Abducts the thigh, steadies pelvis during walking.
Gluteus Medius
Lateral the spine. On the outermost part of the abdomen. Flexes and bends the trunk, aids in childbirth, urinating, and pooping.
Internal Oblique
Located lateral the spine in the lower back. Extends and abducts the humerus (the largest bone in the arm).
Latissimus Dorsi
Located at the back of the cheek/lower jaw (mandible). Closes the jaw.
Masseter
Located around the eye. Blinks and closes the eyes.
Orbicularis Oculi
Skin and muscle around the mouth. Closes and protrudes the lips.
Orbicularis Oris
Located at the breast. Abducts and flexes the humerus (largest bone of the arm).
Pectoralis Major
Between the ribs and pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. Flexes vertebral column (AKA spine).
Rectus Abdominus
Located in the middle of the quadriceps. Extends the leg at the knee, and flexes hip on the thigh.
Rectus Femoris
Flexes thigh on the hip. Located superficial to the quadriceps, connects to the knee joint.
Sartorius
Located most medial of the hamstring group. Flexes knee and extends hip.
Semimembranosus
Located at the middle of the hamstring group. Flexes knee and extends hip.
Semitendinosus
Located lateral to the calf. Plantar flexes foot.
Soleous
Located at the neck, connects to the collar bone. Flexes neck and rotates the head.
Sternocleidomastoid
Located lateral the eyes, side of the head. Closes the jaw.
Temporalis
Dorsiflexes and inverts foot. Located lateral the tibia (smaller bone in leg).
Tibialis Anterior
Back of neck, top of back. Extends neck and abducts scapula (shoulder blade).
Trapezius
Located posterior to the bicep in the shoulder girdle (between arm and trunk). Extends elbow.
Triceps Brachii
Most lateral muscle of quadriceps group. Extend knee.
Vastus Lateralis
Most medial of the quadriceps group. Extend knee.
Vastus Medialis
Skin and muscle at corner of the lips. Raises corner of the mouth.
Zygomaticus
Located anterior the thigh. Extends knee.
Quadriceps
Located posterior the thigh. Flexes knee and extends hip.
