Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle
Voluntary, multinucleated structures that compose the skeletal muscle
Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary, only found in the heart
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary, they do not have striations
Exicability
Able to send electrical waves (action potential) along the entire length
Elasticity
Having the ability to recoil back to its original length
Extensibility
Allows muscles to stretch or extend
Contractility
Allows muscles to pull on its attachment and shorten
Fascicle
The muscle fibers that are arranged in bundles
Epimysium
Outermost layer, surrounds entire muscle
Perimysium
Separates and surrounds fascicles
Endomysium
Surrounds each individual muscle fiber
Sarcolemma
Muscle fiber membrane
Myofibril
Individual parallel muscle fibers (made up of actin and myosin)
Sarcoplasm
Inner material surrounding the myofibril (equivalent to the cell’s cytoplasm)
Actin
Thin filaments
Myosin
Thick filaments
Subclavius
Stabilizes clavicle during movement by depressing; depression
Serratus Anterior
Moves arm from side of body to front of the body; scapula, protracts, ribs, elements
Trapezius
Elevates shoulders, shoulder blades together; scapula, retracts, elevates/depresses
Rhomboid Major
Stabilizes scapula during pectoral girdle movement; retracts, rotates inferiorly
Pectorallis Major
Brings/moves elbows together; flexion, adduction, medial
Latissimus Dorsi
Moves elbows back/apart; humerus, extension, adduction, medial, scapula, depression
Deltoid
Lift arms at the shoulder; abduction, flexion, extension, medial, medial, lateral
Supraspinatus
Rotates the elbow outward; abduction
Teres Major
Assists the infraspinatus in rotating the elbow outward; extension adduction
Biceps Brachii
Performs a bicep curl; flexion, supination
Triceps Brachii
Extends forearm; extension
Pronator Teres
Turns hand palm down; pronation
Supinator
Turns hand palm up; supination
Iliacus
Raises the knee at hip; flexion and lateral rotation
Gluteus Maximus
Lower knee and moved thigh back; extension
Gluteus Medius
Opens thigh; Abduction
Gluteus Minimus
Brings thighs together; Abduction
Adductor Longus
Bring thighs back together; Adduction, flexion
Rectus Femoris
Moves lower leg out in front of the body; tibia/fibula, extension
Biceps Femoris
Moves back of lower leg up and back towards the buttocks; tibia/fibula, flexion
Tibialis Anterior
Raises sole of the foot off the ground, bend foot upward; Dorsiflexion, inversion
Extensor Hallucis Longus
Raises sole of the foot off the ground, extends big toe; Dorsiflexion, extension
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Raises sole of the foot off the ground, extends toes; Dorsiflexion, extension
Gastrocnemius
Lowers sole of the foot to the ground, moving leg back; Plantar flexion
Soleus
Lowers sole of the foot to the ground, maintains walking posture; Plantar flexion
Tibialis Posterior
Lowers sole of the foot to the ground, when jumping; Plantar flexion
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Lowers sole of the foot to the ground, bends inside of foot upward; Plantar flexion and inversion
Flexor Hallicus Longus
Flexes big toe; Flexion
