muscular system Flashcards
skeletal muscle
fibers are multinucleated structures that compose the skeletal muscle
cardiac muscle
are only found in the heart
smooth muscle
can be found in hollow organs such as bladder, stomach, uterus, intestines, and passageways of circulatory system
excitability
Able to send electrical waves along the entire length
elasticity
ability to recoil back to its original length
extensibility
Allows muscles to stretch or extend
contractility
Allows muscles to pull on its attachment and shorten
fascicle
muscle fibers that are arranged in bundles
epimysium
Outermost layer, surrounds entire muscle
perimysium
Separates and surrounds fascicles
endomysium
Surrounds each individual muscle fiber
sarcolemma
Muscle fiber membrane
myofibril
Individual parallel muscle fibers
sarcoplasm
Inner material surrounding the myofibril
actin
thin filaments
myosin
thick filaments
subclavius
stabilizes clavicle during movement by depressing it
target motion direction-depression
serratus anterior
moves arm from side of body to front of body: assists with inhalation
target motion direction-scapula: protracts; ribs: elevates
trapezius
elevates shoulders: pulls shoulder blades together: tilts head backwards
target motion direction-scapula: cervical spine
rhomboid major
stabilizes scapula during pectoral girdle movement
target motion direction- retracts: rotates inferiorly
pectoralis major
brings elbows together: moves elbows up
target motion direction- flexion; adduction; medial rotation
latissimus dorsi
moves elbow back; spreads elbows apart
target motion direction- humerus; extension, adduction, medial rotation: scapula; rotation
deltoid
lifts arms at the shoulder
target motion direction- abduction; flexion; extension; medial and lateral rotation
supraspinatus
rotates the elbow outwards
target motion direction- abduction
teres major
assists the infraspinatus in rotating the elbow outwards
target motion direction- extension; adduction
biceps brachii
performs a bicep curl; also allows the palm of hand to point toward body while flexing
target motion direction-flexion; supination
triceps brachii
extends forearm, as during a punch
target motion direction- extension
pronator teres
turns hand palm-down
target motion direction-pronation
supinator
turn hand palm-up
target motion direction- supination
