Muscular skeletal system Flashcards
Name the funtions of the skeletal system
Protection, support and movement
Mineral storage (calcium)
Energy storage in the form of yellow marrow
Production of blood cells in the red marrow
Anchorage points for tendons/muscles
Name the parts of the axial skeleton (4)
Skull and facial bones
Thoracic bones and ribs
Spine
The vertebral column (back)
Which bones make up the appendicular skeleton?
Limbs, legs and arms
What is the function of an osteoclast?
They break down bone
What is the function of an osteoblast
Forms new bone
What is the function of a chondrocyte
Cell which forms cartilage
What is the function of a fibroblast
collagen formation
What is the function of an osteocyte
they’re the main cells which make up bone
What is osteoporosis?
loss of bone density, usually due to menopause
What is osteoarthritis?
Wear and tear degeneration of bone joints
What is rickets
The pathological loss of bone tissue producing a reduction in bone mass density resulting in skeletal deformity in children
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
.an autoimmune reaction produces joint inflammation and deformity due to the destruction of cartilage
What is osteomalacia?
Rickets but in adults
Name the fat-soluble hormone responsible for regulating total body calcium, done mineral storage and bone density
Vitamin D
Bones are classified by shape, what are they?
Long
short
irregular
flat
sesamoid
Long - femur
Short - carpals
Irregular - vertebra
Flat - sternum
Sesamoid - patella
