Muscular-Skeletal System Flashcards
Functions of Bones
- Support
- Protection
- Storage (fat and minerals)
- Movement
- Blood cell formation
Function of Muscles
- Movement
- Stability
- Generates heat
- Protects organs
- Regulates passage of substances
Bone Fractures
- Comminuted
- Compression
- Depressed
- Impacted
- Spiral
- Greenstick
Comminuted (bone fracture)
Breaks into many fragments (common in older people)
Compressed (bone fracture)
The bone is crushed completely (common in older people)
Depression (done fracture)
Broken bone portion is pushed inward/downward (typical in skull fractures)
Impacted (bone fracture)
Broken bone ends are forced into each other (common when someone tries to break a fall with out stretched arms)
Spiral (bone fracture)
Break occurs when twisting forces are applied to bone (common sports injury)
Greenstick (bone fracture)
Bone breaks incompletely (common in children who have flexible bones)
Simple (bones fracture)
Closed; fractures do NOT penetrate the skin
Compound (bone fractures)
Open; fractures DO penetrate the skin
Skeletal Muscles
- voluntary
- attached to bones
- on the face they are attached to skin
- responds quickly but tires easily
- largest of all types
Smooth Muscles
-involuntary
-walls of hollow organs (NOT the heart)
Ex. Bladder and stomach
Cardiac Muscles
- involuntary
- found in the walls of the heart
- contractions cause chambers in the heart to become smaller
