Mouth- mechanical; biting and chewing
Stomach- mechanical; contract and churn
Chemical digestion
Mouth- chemical; saliva breaks down material
Stomach- chemical; pepcin + hydrochloric acid breaks down proteins
Small intestine- chemical; pancreatic enzymes break down material
Nutrients digested
Mouth- carbs/starch (amylose)
Stomach- proteins, alcohol
Small intestine- carbs, proteins lipids
Large intestine- none
Pancreas
His produces enzymes, hormones and alkaline fluids that help with digestion
Liver
Produces bile which helps break down fats, this also helps regulate blood composition including sugar, protein and fats. It removes bilirubin and ammonia from the blood
Small intestine
Made up of three sections -duodenum: upper part -ilium: second portion -jejunum Most nutrient ingestion occurs in the small intestine
Large intestine
Colon
-absorbs water and discrete waste
