Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Left and right atria
Separate the upper chambers of the heart. They receive blood from veins and they push blood to the ventricles which is why they have thin walls
Left and right ventricles
Thick walked lower chambers. Push blood into arteries
Septum
Thick wall that separates the atrium and ventricles
Tricuspid/ mitral valves
One way valves in between the atria and ventricles
Aortic valves
One way valves between the ventricles and the arteries
Veins
Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
Venules
A merged group of capillaries. Microscopic veins
Capillaries
The smallest vessel in the body. Gasses and nutrients can diffuse through the thin walls. One blood cell thick
Arterioles
A branch of an artery that gives rise to a capillary
Arteries
Carries blood away from the heart. Always carries oxygenated blood, except for the pulmonary artery (which carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs)
Pulmonary circulation
Heart -> lungs -> heart
Systemic circulation
Heart -> body -> heart
Sinoatrial nodes (SA nodes)
Cause atria to contract which forces blood to the ventricles
Atrioventricular nodes (AV node)
Cause the ventricles to contract which forces blood to the lungs or around the body
