Musco-skeletal system Flashcards
Muscoskeletal system function
aid body in movement, form, and stability
5 main functions
- movement
- structural support
- organ protection
- blood cell production
5 storage of minerals
organs
bones
joints
tissues
tendons
ligaments
cartilage
muscle
4 bones types
long bone, found in arms and legs, work as levers for movement
short bone, wrists and ankles, cube shaped
flat bone, ribs, shoulder blade, breast bone, skull bone
irregular bone, spine
bones 3 main parts
spongy bone: porous, red bone marrow, end f the bones, produces red blood cells, light weigh, shock absorber
bone marrow: center of bone, soft fatty tissue (red/yellow colour) , stores fat to convert to energy, makes all blood contents
(marrow and vessels fill cavities ibn bones that store fat, and stem cells that produce blood cells)
compact bone: sturdy layer, dense and makes up 80% of human skeleton, protective shell around spongy bone tissue
rigid strength and resistance, stores and releases calcium, bones stay compact while still receiving nutrients and disposing of waste, made of osteon
cells that keep bone tissue as they control the mineral and calcium contents
ostyocytes
are bones constantly re building
yes
cells that create bone tissue
ostyoblast
cells that break down old bone tissue
ostyoclast
joints
2 or more bones meet to allow movement
made of bones, cartilage ligaments, and (synovium)
bear weight and move body through space
types of joints
fiborus - dont move
cartaliginous - dont move
synovial joints - space between the 2 bones
held together by connective tissue
skull, jaw teeth, dont move
fibrous
bones are connected by cartilage, and little movement
epiphyseal plates n growing children
cartaliginous
grinding movements and limited range of motion
carpal bones, tarsal bones (feet), in between vertebras
planer jonts
one bone moves, one is stationary
elbow and knees
hinge joints
rotational movement around an axis
vertebras in the neck, wrist
pivot joints
angular movement along to axes
fingers and wrist
condyloid joint
angular movement with greater range of motion
thumb
saddle joint
greatest range of motion, movement in all directions
hips and shoulders
ball and socket
muscle tissue
long fibrous cells
parallel bundles to strengthen muscles
smooth muscle tissue: in walls of hollow organs, controlled involuntary, non-striated, thin and thick filament
connective muscle tissue: binds tissues together,
loose connective = holds organs in place,
dense connective = makes up tendons and ligaments,
skeletal muscle tissue: support and structure in between bones, make blood cells
skeletal tissue
compact tissue = outer harder tissue
cancellous tissue = spongy inside bones, structural and flexibility, light
subchondral tissue = smooth tissue, end of bones, covered in cartilage, frictionless movement
tendons
connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
not stretchy
elbow, heel, shoulder, wrist
flexor tendons = bend and curl
exstensor joints = straighten and extend
ligamentous joints = stability (most numerous)
ligaments
soft tissue binds 2 bones together
yellow is stretchy, white is collagen
parallel to stretch direction
cartilage
strong an flexible connective tissue = protects bones and joints
smooth surface for articulation with little friction
end of bones
muscles
skeletal - opposing pairs
smooth - internal structures
cardiac - heart, contracts and releases involentary
4 muscle functions
movement
posture
joint stability
heat production
illnesses and disease
osteopenia
carpal tunnel
osteoarthritis
what is osteopenia
bone density decreasing as they get weaker and weaker
symptoms of osteopenia
nothing
osteopenia age group
50-70
osteopenia treatment
diet (calcium intake) exercise, and vitamins
carpal tunnel what is it
effects arms and hands
carpal tunnel symptoms
grip weakness, pain and numbness
treatment for carpal tunnel
corticosteroids, injected into hand
carpal tunnel age groups
40-60
osteoarthritis what is it
hand hips knees
osteoarthritis symptoms
swelling, pain in effected joint, stifness
osteoarthritis treatments
healthy lifstyle
osteoarthritis age groups
50-70
