Muscles of Upper limb Flashcards
Biceps brachii
O - (SH) coracoid process (LH) supraglenoid tubercle and lip of glenoid cavity.
I - deltoid tuberosity and proximal radius
A - Flexion and medial rotation of humerus, Abduction of the humerus, Extension and lateral rotation of the humerus
Brachialis
O - distal anterior humerus
I - coronoid process of ulna and capsule of elbow
A - lifts ulna as biceps lift radius
Brachioradialis
O - supracondylar ridge on distal end of humerus
I - base of radial styloid process
A - flexes forearm, stabilizes elbow
Triceps brachii
O - (LoH) infraglenoid tubercle of scapula (LaH) posterior shaft of humerus (MeH) posterior humeral shaft
I - olecranon process of ulna
A - powerful extensor, antagonist of forearm flexors, stabilize shoulder joint
Pronator teres
O - medial epicondyle of humerus; coronoid process of ulna
I - Common tendon into lateral radius, midshaft
A - Pronates forearm; weak flexor of elbow
Flexor carpi radialis
O - medial epicondyle of humerus
I - Base of second and third metacarpals; insertion tendon easily seen and provides guide to position of radial artery at wrist (pulse taking)
A - Powerful flexor of wrist; abducts hand; weak synergist of elbow flexion
Palmaris longus
O - medial epicondyle of humerus
I - palmar aponeurosis; (fascia of palm)
A - Tenses skin and fascia of palm during hand movements; weak wrist flexor; weak synergist for elbow flexion
Flexor carpi ulnaris
O - Medial epicondyle of humerus; olecranon and
posterior surface of ulna.
I - Pisiform and hamate bones and base of fifth
metacarpal
A - Flexes wrist and abducts hands
Flexor digitorium superficialis
O - medial epicondyle of humerus, coronoid process of ulna; shaft of radius
I - four tendons into middle phalanges of fingers 2–5
A - Flexes wrist and middle phalanges of fingers 2–5
Flexor pollicis longus
O - anterior surface of radius an interosseous membrane
I - distal phalanx of thumb
A - Flexes distal phalanx of thumb
Flexor digitorum profundus
O - coronoid process, anteromedial surface of ulna, and interosseous membrane
I - four tendons into distal phalange
A - Flexes distal interphalangeal joints; slowacting flexor of any or all fingers; helps flex wrist
Pronator quadratus
O - distal portion of anterior ulnar shaft
I - distal surface of anterior radius
A - Prime mover of forearm pronation; acts with pronator teres; also helps hold ulna and radius together
Extensor carpi radialis longus
O - Lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus
I - Base of second metacarpal
A - Extends wrist in conjunction with extensor carpi ulnaris and abducts wrist in conjunction with flexor carpi radialis
Extensor carpi radialis brevis
O - lateral epicondyle of humerus
I - base of third metacarpal
A - Extends and abducts wrist; act synergistically with extensor carpi radialis longus to steady wrist during
finger flexion
Extensor carpi digitorum
O - Distal humerus
I - Distal phalanges of second to fifth fingers
A - extend fingers
