Gluteus Maximus Insertion
Gluteal tuberosity (deep fibres), iliotibial band (superficial fibres)
Gluteus Maximus Action
extension of hip, lateral rotation of hip, lower fibres assist in adduction of hip, upper fibres do abduction of hip, rotates pelvis posterior, steadies fumur on tibia
Gluteus Maximus Nerve
Inferior Gluteal Nerve (L5, S1-S2)
Gluteus Medius Origin
between posterior & anterior gluteal lines, iliac crest above, gluteal aponeurosis
Gluteus Medius Insertion
flattened tendon into oblique ridge on lateral surface of greater trochanter
Gluteus Medius Action
abduction of hip, medial rotation of hip (ant. Fibres), lateral rotation of hip (post fibres), prevents pelvis from dropping
Gluteus Medius Nerve
Superior Gluteal Nerve (L4, L5 & S1)
Gluteus Minimus Origin
between anterior & inferior gluteal lines
Gluteus Minimus Insertion
ridge on lateral & anterior surface of GT, hip joint capsule
Gluteus Minimus Action
abducts hip, medially rotates hip, may assist flexion of hip
Gluteus Minimus Nerve
Superior Gluteal Nerve (L4, L5 & S1)
Biceps Femoris Long Head Origin
inferior medial impression on the superior aspect of ischial tuberosity, lower part of sacrotuberous ligament
Biceps Femoris Short Head Origin
lateral lip of linea aspera, lateral supracondylar line, lateral intermuscular
Biceps Femoris Insertion
combines into a single tendon & inserts in lateral side of head of fibula, lateral condyle of the tibia
Biceps Femoris Action
flexion of knee, extension of hip, assists in lateral rotation of hip, lateral rotation of tibia when knee is semi-flexed
Biceps Femoris Nerve
Peroneal Branch of the Sciatic Nerve (L5 S1-2)
Semitendinosus Origin
shares tendon with long head of biceps femoris, forms long rounded tendon 1/2 way down thigh, lies on surface of semimebranosus, tendon curves around medial condyle of postero-medial tibia, passes over medial collateral ligament
Semitendinosus Insertion
Superior portion of medial surface of tibia below tibial tubercle
Semitendinosus Action
Flexion of knee, extension of hip, medial rotation of tibia when knee is semi-flexed
Semitendinosus Nerve
Tibial Branch of Sciatic Nerve (L4-L5 S1-S2)
Semimebranosus Origin
lateral aspect of ischial tuberosity, passes deep to semitendiosus & long head of biceps femoris
Semimebranosus Insertion
groove for semimembranosus on tibia, located on posterior aspect of medial tibial condyle, other slips to medial tibial margin behind medial collateral ligament
Semimebranosus Action
Flexion of knee, extension of hip, medial rotation of tibia when knee is semi-flexed
Semimebranosus Nerve
Tibial Branch of Sciatic Nerve (L4-L5 S1-S2)
Gracilis Origin
body of pubis (lower 1/2), inferior pubic ramus, fibres run downward & around medial condyle
Gracilis Insertion
upper medial surface of tibia below tibial tubercle, part of pes anserine group, pes anserine bursa
Gracilis Action
