Muscles Of Thigh Anterior Compartment Flashcards
Name the muscles in this compartment
Pectineus
Sertorius
Quadriceps femoris
Iliopsoas (passes into anterior compartment)
Innervation of this compartment
Femoral nerve
What is the iliopsoas composed of? What is its innervation?
Psoas major (anterior rami L1-3) and the iliacus (femoral nerve)
Iliopsoas
Flexes thigh at hip joint
Sartorius
Flexor, abductor and lateral rotator of hip joint
Flexor of knee joint
Pectineus
Addiction and flexion at hip joint
Quadricep femoris muscles include…
Vastus lateralis
Vastus intermedius
Vastus medialis
Rectus femoris
Vastus lateralis
Extends the knee joint and stabilises patella
Vastus intermedius
Extends the knee joint and stabilises the patella
Clinical relevance: testing quadriceps femoris
Can be used to test the femoral nerve in cases of suspected nerve palsy.
Patient supine with knee slightly flexed; patient is asked to extend the leg (at the knee) against resistance. If femoral nerve is damaged, contraction of the quadriceps femoris will be absent.
Rectus femoris
Only muscle of the quadriceps to cross both the hip and knee joints.
Flexes thigh at the hip joint and extends at the knee joint
Vastus medialis
Extends knee joint and stabilises patella
Horizontal fibres at distal end increases stabilisation of patella
