Femoral Triangle Flashcards
Name the borders of the femoral triangle
Inguinal ligament (superior border) Lateral border (medial border of sartorius muscle) Medial border (medial border of adductor longus muscle - rest of this muscle forms the floor of the triangle)
Name the roof and floor of the triangle
Anteriorly - roof - fascia lata
Posteriorly - base - pectineus, iliopsoas, adductor longus muscle
Name the contents of the femoral triangle
Femoral nerve Femoral artery Femoral vein Empty space Femoral canal - contains deep lymph nodes and vessels
What is found in the femoral sheath?
Femoral artery, vein and canal are contained within a fascial compartment
Name the contents of the femoral canal
Lymphatic vessels
Deep lymph node
Empty space
Loose connective tissue
What is the significance of the empty space in the femoral triangle?
The empty space allows the veins and lymph vessels to distend, so they can cope with different levels of flow.
Clinical relevance: femoral pulse
Inferior to where the femoral artery crosses the inguinal ligament, can be palpated to measure the femoral pulse.
Femoral artery crosses midway between pubic symphysis and ASIS (known as mid-inguinal point).
Clinical relevance: femoral hernia
Part of bowel pushes into femoral canal, underneath inguinal ligament.
Manifests clinically as a lump or bulge in an area of the femoral triangle. Usually requires surgical intervention to treat.
