Muscles of the neck and trunk (epaxial and hypaxial) Flashcards
Longus Colli m.
Insertion, Action, Innervation
INSERTION: ventral tubercle of the Atlas
ACTION: to flex the neck
INNERVATION: ventral branches of cervical and thoracic spinal nerves
Longus Capitis m.
Action, Innervation
ACTION: to flex the Atlanto-occipital joint and draw the neck ventrally
INNERVATION: ventral branches of cervical spinal nerves
Scalenus m.
Action
ACTION: flex the neck laterally, also when neck if fixed, acts as a muscle of inspiration
Serratus ventralis (2 Parts)
Innervation
Cervicis and thoracis
INNERVATION: long thoracis nerve
Serratus Dorsalis Cranialis m.
Origin, Insertion, Action, Innervation
ORIGIN: Aponeurosis of thoracolumbar fascia
INSERTION: distinct serrations on the craniolateral surfaces of the ribs
ACTION: Lifts the ribs for inspiration
INNERVATION: intercostal nerve
Intercostal m. (Internal and External)
Action, Innervation
ACTION: External- draws ribs together to aid in inspiration and enlarge thoracic cavity
Internal: draws ribs together to lessen size of thoracic cavity during expiration
INNERVATION: intercostal nerve
External Abdominal Oblique m.
Origin, Insertion, Action, Innervation
ORIGIN: last few ribs and thoracolumbar fascia
INSERTION: linea alba
ACTION: compression and support of the abdominal viscera
INNERVATION: ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar nerves
Internal Abdominal Oblique m.
Origin, Insertion, Action, Innervation
ORIGIN: superficial leaf of thoracolumbar fascia caudal to the last rib, tuber coxae, and part of inguinal ligament
INSERTION: linea alba and costal arch on rectus abdominis
ACTION: contraction of muscles aids in urination, defecation, flexion of vertebral column, parturition, locomotion, and respiration, also compression and support of abdominal viscera
INNERVATION: ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
Rectus Abdominis m.
Origin, Insertion, Action, Innervation
ORIGIN: pecten of the pubis (prepubic tendon)
INSERTION: sternum
ACTION: to flex the thoracolumbar part of the vertebral column
INNERVATION: ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
Transversus Abdominis m.
Origin, Insertion, Action, Innervation
ORIGIN: arises dorsally from the medial surfaces of the last 4-5 ribs and from the transverse processes of all of the lumbar vertebrae by the thoracolumbar lumbar fascia.
INSERTION: aponeurosis of transversus abdominis and sheath of rectus abdominis, mainly linea alba and prepubic tendon
ACTION: same action as 4 major abdominal muscles
INNERVATION: ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
What is the vascular lacuna?
The base of the femoral triangle where the femoral vessels pass through
Iliocostalis thoracis m.
Action, innervation
ACTION: Fixation of the vertebral column as well as lateral flexion when only one side contracts, ALSO AIDS IN RESPIRATION AND PULLS RIBS CAUDALLY FOR EXPIRATION
INNERVATION: dorsal branches of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae
Iliocostalis lumborum m.
Action, Innervation
ACTION: Fixation of the vertebral column and lateral movements of the spine.
Longissimus thoracis et lumborum m.
Action: Innervation
ACTION: thoracolumbar portion (extends spinal column) also to stabilize the trunk during rotary movements of the pelvis produced by hindlimb muscles
INNERVATION: dorsal branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
Longissimus cervicis m.
Action
ACTION: to extend the neck, also extend the neck obliquely to one side in unilateral movement
