Muscles of the Face Flashcards
Orbicularis oris
comprises intertwined fibers, forms a ring around the lips and when contracted, contributes to opening and closing of the lips, puckering, and vertical or lateral movements of the lips.
Buccinator
Inserts into the upper and lower lip; forms part of the cheek wall, and contraction produces tension that pulls the cheek against the teeth
Risorius
Originates from masseter muscle and inserts at the angle of the mouth; contraction retracts the angle of the mouth
Zygomatic minor
contraction pulls the corners of the mouth upward
zygomatic major
originates from zygomatic bone and inserts into the corner of the mouth; contraction draws the corners of the mouth backward, simultaneously lifting and pulling the corners of the mouth sideways
depressor labii inferioris
originates from teh anterior surface of the mandible; contraction depresses and turns the lower lip outward
Mentalis
originates from the mandible inferior to the incisor teeth and courses downward into the chin; Contraction forces curling of the lip
Levator anguli oris and depressor anguli oris
draw the corners of the mouth up and down, respectively. Contraction of each of these muscles can also draw the lips together
incisivus labii superioris and incisivus labii inferoris
contraction pulls the corners of the mouth upward or downward toward the midline
platysma
Broad, superficial muscles with infra and supraclavicular origins; contraction can depress the lower lip and corners of the mouth or produce a vertical wringkling of the skin of the neck as the skin of the neck is drawn toward the mandible.
