Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
Masseter muscles
contribute to mandible elevation
temporal muscles
contribute to mandible elevation; contraction of posterior fibers of the temporal muscles retracts the mandible
Medial/internal pterygoid muscles
contribute to mandible elevation
Lateral/external pterygoid muscles
responsible fo rdepressing and protruding the mandible; the suprahyoid muscles assist in mandible depression.
paired
all muscles of mastication of paired-there is a right and left muscle
Innervation
muscles of mastication are innervated by the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
Temporomandibular joint
A small hinge joint located at the boundary of the temporal bone and the mandible makes jaw motion in three planes of direction possible
Superior joint of TMJ
connects the temporal bone with the articular disc
Inferior joint of TMJ
Connects the articular disc with the mandible
TMJ
involved in speech, chewing and swallowing and is susceptible to dysfunction or dislocation.
