Muscles of the Anterio and Medial Femoral Compartments Flashcards
Identify the 4 muscles of the quadriceps muscle
- Rectus Femoris
- Vastus Lateralis
- Vastus Intermedius
- Vastus Medialis
Which component of the quads crosses the hip and the knee?
Rectus Femoris
A.I.I.S and superior brim of acetabulum to the superior patellar surface and the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament
Which of the quads is bipennate?
Rectus Femoris
Which Quad muscle has two heads of origin?
Rectus Femoris
Which quad muscle is responsible for maintaining proper patellar tracking?
Vastus Medialis
What is the action of articularis genu?
Prevents the synovial membrane from becoming trapped between the patella and femur when leg is extended
What are the two muscles of the anterior femoral group that cross the hip and knee?
Rectus Femoris
Sartorius
What are the functions of the sartorius muscle?
- Flexion and lateral rotation of the thigh
- Flexion and medial rotation of the leg
- Abducts lower limb when knee is locked
Describe the attachments of the iliopsoas muscle
The psoas major attaches to the following…
- Anterior surfaces of bodies and transverse processes of the last thoracic and all lumbar veretbrae
- Lesser trochanter of femur
The Iliacus attaches to the following
- Iliac fossa
- Lesser trochanter (with psoas major)
What is the significance of the iliopsoas muscle relative to hip flexion? What else does it do?
Their action is important in flexing the trunk against gravity, as when a person does sit ups with legs straight (hips extended).
It also laterally rotates the thigh.
What medial femoral muscle functions as both and adductor and a hamstring muscle?
Adductor Magnus
What adductor muscle has and opening which provides acces to vascular structures passing from the anterior femoral compartment to the popliteal fossa?
Adductor magnus - The adductor hiatus
Which medial femoral muscle has an action at both the hip and the knee?
Gracilis - Adducts the thigh, flexes and medially rotates the leg
Action of psoas major?
Innervation?
Non-weight bearing - flexes and laterally rotates thigh
Weight bearing - flexes trunk
Side bends vertebral column to same side
Ventral Rami of spinal nerves L1,2,3
Action of iliacus?
Innervation?
Flexion and lateral rotation of the thigh
Femoral Nerve (L2,3)
