Psoas Major Origin-3
- Transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
- Side of bodies of T12-S1 vertebrae
- IV discs of T12-S1
Psoas Major Insertion
Strong tendon to lesser trochanter of femur
Psoas Major Innervation
Lumbar plexus via anterior branches of nerves L2-L4
Psoas Major Action-3
Acting inferiorly w/ iliacus-Flexes thigh
Acting superiorly-Laterally flexes vertebral column
When sitting-acts inferiorly w/ iliacus to flex trunk
Iliacus Origin-3
- Superior 2/3 of iliac fossa
- Ala of sacrum
- Anterior sacro-iliac ligaments
Iliacus Insertion-3
- Lesser trochanter of femur
- Shaft of femur
- Psoas major tendon
Iliacus Innervation
Femoral Nerve (L2-L4)
Iliacus Action-2
- Flexes thigh and stabilizes hip joint
- Acts with psoas major
Quadratus Lumborum Origin-2
- Medial half of inferior border of 12th rib
- Tips of lumbar transverse processes
Quadratus Lumborum Insertion-2
- Iliolumbar ligament
- Internal lip of iliac crest
Quadratus Lumborum Innervation

Quadratus Lumborum Action
- Extends and laterally flexes vertebral column
- Fixes 12th rib during inspiration
