Muscles of facial expression Flashcards
What is Bells’ Palsy?
Sudden loss of movement on the right side of his face (can be caused if we inject the wrong area)
- Viral infection of the facial nerve
- Good recovery after a course of corticosteroids
What is the structure of facial skin?
where are muscles of facial expressions found?
-The muscles of facial expression are found in the superficial fascia.
what are the muscles labelled?
(Quadratus superioris- Group of four muscles sitting superior to the lips)
What are the 4 Quadratus superioris muscles?
quadratus superioris:
- zygomaticus major
- zygomaticus minor
- levator labii superioris
- levator labii superioris
alaequae nasi
What is the Modiolus?
What is the Buccinator attachement sites?
Modiolus-connective tissure area- common area of many muscle insertion.
Buccinator attachement sites- anteriorly attaches to orbicularis oris and posteriorls attaches to pterygomandibular raphe.
What are the 2 parts to the orbicularis oculi?
- 2 parts:
- orbital (external) the part responble for srunching your eyes up tightly
- palpebral (internal / eyelid) is about gental closing of eye, i.e blink
What is the 5 layers of the SCALP?
- 5 layers of the scalp:
- S - Skin
- C - Connective tissue
- A - Aponeurosis
- L - Loose connective tissue
- P - Pericranium
What are all the muscles of facial expression inervated by?
-All muscles of facial expression innervated by the Facial Nerve (CN VII)
How to Clinically test motor function of CN VII?
- Clinically test motor function of CN VII:
- ask patient to frown
- ask patient to close eyes tightly
- ask patient to smile
- ask patient to puff out cheeks
What are the 6 branches of the facial nerve?
6 branches:
Posterior auricular
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Mandibular
Cervical
Trick to on how to know difference between vein and artery?
Vein has a very straight course where as artery has a very wiggley course.
What are the sensory nerve supplies to the face
CN V3/c
CN V2/b
CN V1/a
Opthalmic- Bridge of nose down to tip and upper eyelids
Maxillary- side of nose and upper lip ,lower eyelids
Mandibular- lower lip, chin, mandible
