Muscles in thenar cpmpartment Flashcards
What is the innervation of all thenar muscles?
motor recurrent branch of radial nerve (million dollar nerve)
How does the radial artery course in the thenar compartment?
dives deep to the 1st dorsal interosseus and divides into the princeps pollicis and deep palmar arterial arch
the radial side receive of the index finger a separate branch called the radialis indices from princeps pollicis artery
What are the muscles of the thenar compartment?
abductor pollicis brevis
flexor pollicis brevis
opponens pollicis
What is the attachment and action of abductor pollicis brevis?
terminates at base of proximal phalanx
assist the long abductor in abduction of the the thumb
What is the attachment and action of flexor pollicis brevis?
terminates at the base of proximal phalanx
assist long flexor in flexion of thumb
What are the attachments and action of opponen pollicis muscles?
inserts into shaft of first metacarpal
creates slight rotation to create opposition (ability for the pads and thumb to meet)
What happens when the median nerve is damaged?
opposition is impossible because opponnes pollicis does not have a back up
