muscles and nerves disease Flashcards
Which tract do the motor nerve fibres go down
Corticospinal tract
What is the presentation of muscle disease
- Weakness of skeletal muscles
- cardiac symptoms
- cramps and stiffness
- muscle pain
- myoglobinuria
What is polymyositis
Inflammation of the muscle which causes painful weak muscles
What is dermatomyositis
Polymyositis but with a characteristic rash - inflammation of the muscles such as polymyositis with acute, painful, weak muscles
What is seen on bloods fir dermatomyositis and polymyositis
High CK
autoantibodies
What is the treatment of dermatomyositis and polymyositis
Immunosuppresion
Describe the presentation of myasthenia gravis
- Fatiguable weakness which gets worse through the day
- Ptosis
- Limb weakness
- Diplopia - double vision
What is the treatment for myasthenia gravis
- Cholinesterase inhibitors for symptom treatment
- Immunuglobulin, steroids and immunosuppression for disease modifying
What are the signs and symptoms of peripheral nerve disease
- Loss of sensation and pain
- muscle thinning and weakness
- lower motort neuron symptoms
Describe motor neuron disease presentation
Mix of LMN and UMN disease
UMN - spasticity, brisk reflexes and extensor plantar
LMN - muscle fasciculations, wasting and weakness
- **RAPIDLY PROGRESSIVE DISEASE **
