What is a glioma
tumour of the astrocytes - the cells thats foot processes help with the blood brain barrier
What are the characteristics of a meningioma
- slow growing
- extra-axial
- usually benign
- arise from arachnoid
- frequently occur along falx, convexity, or sphenoid bone
- usually cured if completely removed
What is the common presentation of a pituitary adenoma and why
- Visual disturbances due to the pituitary gland being close to the optic chiasm
- Hormone imbalance
- raised ICP
- focal neurological deficit
- epileptic fits
- CSF obstruction
What are the symptoms of raised ICP
- Headache - typically morning
- Nausea and vomiting
- visual disturbance
- sleepiness
- cognitive impairment
- altered consciousness
What are the signs of raised ICP
- Papilloedema
- abducens palsy - eye not able to abduct
- cognitive impairment
- occulomoter nerve palsy - ptosis and constricted pupils
What is ataxia associated with
cerebellum
What is acalculi, agraphia, finger agnosia and right/left conclusion associated with
Parietal lobe lesion
Where is a lesion expected in an individual with bi temporal hemianopia
Pituitary due to optic chiasm compression
Presented to medical team with cognitive language dysfunction:
difficulty reading e mails
difficulty expressing what he wished to say
short-term memory impairment - where is the lesion
Temporo-parietal area in the dominant hemisphere due to wernickes being affected
What investigation should not be done when a mass in the brain is suspected
Lumbar puncture as it can cause a herniation syndrome
