Muscles Flashcards
What is the main job of a ligament?
Connect bone to bone
Stabilise a joint
What happens if you overstretch a ligament or it is weak?
Get a micro year that leads to sprains or dislocation
What are the main jobs of tendons?
Connect muscle to bone
Act like a spring -> useful when jumping
What happens when a tendon is injured?
Microtears- normally repair themselves (strengthen tendon)
Tear- too big, too many (can’t repair themselves)
What is a sporting example of using a tendon?
Forehand shot in tennis
What is a sporting example of using ligaments?
Different stretches in gymnastics
What is a voluntary muscle?
Muscles that we can control
Are attached to the skeleton by tendons
Cause movement
Made up of long cylindrical fibres
What is a sporting example of using voluntary muscles?
Contracting arm muscles to lift a weight
What is a cardiac muscle?
Found in walk of heart
Type of involuntary muscle
Can’t be controlled
Keep heart rate at a steady pace whilst doing sport
What is a sporting example of using cardiac muscle?
Sports that require lots of CV Fitness, eg running
What are involuntary muscles
Muscles that cannot be controlled by a person
Controlled by the involuntary nervous system
Found in organs such as the digestive system
What is a sporting example of involuntary muscles?
Keep blood going around your body so you don’t get cramp whilst exercising
What is the function of the gluteals?
Extension at the hip
What is the function of the hip flexors
Flexion at the hip
What is the function of quadriceps
Extension of the leg at the knee
What is the function of the hamstrings
Flexion of the leg at the knee
What is the function of the gastrocnemius
Points the toes
Plantar flexion
What is the function of the tibialis anterior
Dorsi flexion
Pulls toes up towards shin
What is the function of the trapezius
Adducts and extends arm at elbow
What is the function of the pectoralis major
Adducts arm at shoulder
What is the function of the latissimus dorsi
Arch the back
What is the function of the biceps
Flexion of the arm at the elbow
What is the function of the triceps
Extension of the arm at the elbow
What is the function of the external obliques
Pull chest downwards
Flexion and rotation of the spinal column
What is the function of the deltoid
Abducts arm at shoulder
Sporting example of the gluteals
Pulling leg back before kicking ball
Sporting example for hip flexors
Lifting knee in sprinting/hurdles
Sporting eg for quads
Kicking a ball
Jumping upwards
Sport eg for hamstrings
Bending knee before kicking ball
Sport eg for gastrocnemius
Running
Pointing toes in trampolining
Sport eg for tibialis anterior
Ski jumping
Sport eg for pectorals
Forehand drive in tennis
Sport eg for latissimus dorsi
Butterfly stroke in swimming
Sport eg for biceps
Pull up
Drawing bow in archery
Sport eg for triceps
Press up
Throwing javelin
Sport eg for external obliques
Crunches in gym
Sport eg for deltoid
Serving in tennis

What is paired with the gluteals
Hip flexors
What is the contracting muscle called in a pair?
The agonist
Or
The prime mover
What is the muscle relaxing in a pair called?
The antagonist
What are the main characteristics of type 1 muscle fibre
Small
Very red
High fatigue resistance
What are the main characteristics of type 2a muscle fibres
Moderate size
Red
What are the characteristics of type 2x muscle fibre
Large
White
What is the duration and power of type 1 muscle fibre
Long time
Low power
What is the duration and power of type 2a muscle fibre
Medium power
1-2 minutes
What is the duration and power of type 2x muscle fibre
Short time
Maximum power
What sports are type 1 muscles important for
Walking
Jogging
Anything long distance and requires stamina
What sports are type 2a muscles important for
Mike run
Swimming
Track cycling
What sports are muscle type 2x important for
Sprinting
Lifting weights
