Connect bone to bone
Stabilise a joint
What happens if you overstretch a ligament or it is weak?
Get a micro year that leads to sprains or dislocation
What are the main jobs of tendons?
Connect muscle to bone
Act like a spring -> useful when jumping
What happens when a tendon is injured?
Microtears- normally repair themselves (strengthen tendon)
Tear- too big, too many (can’t repair themselves)
What is a sporting example of using a tendon?
Forehand shot in tennis
What is a sporting example of using ligaments?
Different stretches in gymnastics
What is a voluntary muscle?
Muscles that we can control
Are attached to the skeleton by tendons
Cause movement
Made up of long cylindrical fibres
What is a sporting example of using voluntary muscles?
Contracting arm muscles to lift a weight
What is a cardiac muscle?
Found in walk of heart
Type of involuntary muscle
Can’t be controlled
Keep heart rate at a steady pace whilst doing sport
What is a sporting example of using cardiac muscle?
Sports that require lots of CV Fitness, eg running
What are involuntary muscles
Muscles that cannot be controlled by a person
Controlled by the involuntary nervous system
Found in organs such as the digestive system
What is a sporting example of involuntary muscles?
Keep blood going around your body so you don’t get cramp whilst exercising
What is the function of the gluteals?
Extension at the hip
What is the function of the hip flexors
Flexion at the hip
What is the function of quadriceps
Extension of the leg at the knee
What is the function of the hamstrings
Flexion of the leg at the knee
What is the function of the gastrocnemius
Points the toes
Plantar flexion
What is the function of the tibialis anterior
Dorsi flexion
Pulls toes up towards shin
